Portugal manager Roberto Martinez has admitted that Nigeria remain a strong and competitive side even in the absence of key forwards Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman ahead of their international friendly.

Super Eagles manager Eric Chelle confirmed that both attackers will miss the match following their Unity Cup triumph, explaining that the duo has been rested after a demanding season with their respective clubs.

Despite the absence of the Galatasaray and Atletico Madrid forwards, Martinez said both sides stand to gain valuable experience from the encounter as Portugal continue their preparations for upcoming competitions.

Speaking at his pre-match press conference ahead of the clash with Portugal, Martinez said he expects a highly competitive encounter, praising Nigeria’s tactical flexibility and the coach’s ability to deploy different systems that suit various players.

He also referenced Nigeria’s recent performances, including their friendly against Poland, describing the approach as dynamic and adaptable.

“There are so many aspects to play against a team like Congo,” Martinez said. “There are aspects in terms of the forward players of Nigeria, I think they are helpful for us to be able to defend as a team.

“I expect a Nigerian team that is very competitive. I enjoyed the last game against Poland, the last friendly game. I love the idea of the coach. The different systems that they use fit different players in different positions.”

He singled out Calvin Bassey and Alex Iwobi as players he knows well, adding that Nigeria’s experience and quality will ensure a tough and competitive match for both sides.

“I can see that obviously players like Osimhen and Lookman are not here. They have other players who perform at high levels,” he added.

“I expect a very competitive game, real quality players with a lot of experience like Bassey and Iwobi. Players that I know very well. Competitive game that would help both teams in many aspects.”

The Super Eagles will be eager to maintain their impressive recent form in friendly matches, having recorded victories over Zimbabwe and Jamaica, as well as a draw against Poland in Warsaw.
