After a difficult start to life at Orlando Pirates Tshepo Mashiloane, the 24-year-old defender finds himself back at the club following a loan spell at Sekhukhune United, with questions now being asked about whether he deserves a second chance to prove himself at Mayfair.

Mashiloane arrived at Pirates carrying a strong reputation after impressing at Baroka FC, but his opportunities under then-head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou were limited.
He made just two appearances at the start of the 2025/26 campaign, both ending in defeat against Sekhukhune United and Marumo Gallants.
The early signs suggested that the move was not going according to plan.
With game time difficult to come by, Pirates opted to send the defender to Sekhukhune on loan in search of regular football and an opportunity to rediscover the form that had initially attracted interest from the Buccaneers.
At first, there were concerns that the loan move would not provide the desired solution. Mashiloane found himself battling for opportunities once again, but his perseverance eventually paid off.
By the end of the campaign, he had established himself as a regular contributor for Babina Noko, making 19 appearances in all competitions while contributing two goals and two assists from defence. More importantly, he appeared to regain confidence and consistency, two qualities that seemed absent during his brief spell at Pirates.
Now the defender returns to a very different situation.
With Bandile Shandu and Thabiso Lebitso having departed the club, Deano Van Rooyen currently stands as the only recognised right back in the squad. That reality potentially creates an opening that did not exist when Mashiloane first arrived.
The Siya crew understands that Pirates have not yet made a final decision on the player's future, with much depending on the club's transfer business before the window closes.
Long-term target Thabang Matuludi remains high on the Buccaneers' wishlist. The Polokwane City defender is highly regarded by the club and is currently away with Bafana Bafana at the FIFA World Cup. Should Pirates succeed in bringing him to Soweto, Mashiloane's pathway could once again become complicated.
However, if a deal for Matuludi does not materialise, Mashiloane's chances of remaining at the club could increase significantly.
The situation raises an interesting question: was the defender judged too quickly after just two appearances in a struggling Pirates side?
Many players have needed time to adapt to the pressure and expectations that come with wearing the Pirates jersey. Others have used loan spells to revive careers that initially appeared to be heading in the wrong direction.

Mashiloane's performances at Sekhukhune suggest he may fall into the latter category.
For now, Pirates are keeping their options open. Sekhukhune are understood to be monitoring the situation closely after being impressed by the defender's contribution during the second half of the season and could be interested in retaining him should the opportunity arise.
But before any decision is made, Pirates may need to ask themselves whether the player who left on loan is the same player who has now returned.
If his growth at Sekhukhune is any indication, Mashiloane may yet have another chapter to write at Orlando Pirates.
