Rangers are reportedly targeting a move for Hammarby defender Hampus Skoglund as they look to replace the presence of James Tavernier.

The Gers captain announced that he would be leaving Ibrox for a new opportunity last month, and would see out the remainder of his contract.

But the 34-year-old’s exit was marred slightly by the way Rangers lost four games to drop out of the Scottish Premiership title race, defeat in the Old Firm derby confirming another season without silverware.

Tavernier hoped to say goodbye to the fans properly in a final appearance at Ibrox, but dropped out of the squad after finding out that Danny Rohl had left him on the bench against Hibernian.

Rangers transfer chiefs will not only face a difficult task in replacing the right-back’s qualities, but also his leading presence in the squad.

Breaking news on latest signings, departures, and contract news from the Ibrox boardroom.

Football Insider exclusively revealed this week that Rangers will back Rohl with a number of signings in the summer transfer window.

There have been many calls for the 37-year-old to be sacked following a disappointing end to the season, but decision-makers are keen to give him a full season.

Rohl arrived in October, taking over a squad that Russell Martin had left on the floor in terms of confidence.

It took some time but the German did encourage a run of great form, with Rangers winning eight consecutive games between December and January.

But there are obvious gaps in his squad, and they will surely have to be filled before a more successful season can take place.

One of them is now at right-back, and, according to Sportbladet, Rangers are targeting a move for Hammarby man Skoglund this summer.

They are expected to face competition from Schalke for the 22-year-old, who will be allowed to leave the club for the right fee in the coming weeks.

Skoglund is an emerging talent in Sweden, having already made a number of appearances for the international Under-21s.

His breakthrough for Hammarby came in the 2023-24 season, and he has proved to be a key player in the seasons since.

One game last season even saw him provide three assists, with the 22-year-old just as much of an attacking force as he is a defender.

Despite missing out on the Sweden squad going to this summer’s World Cup, Skoglund has been in strong form so far this season.

It is unclear how much Hammarby will expect for the defender, but Rangers may well have to act quickly if they are to jump the queue.
