Djeidi Gassama is growing increasingly likely to leave Rangers in the summer transfer window after a poor end to the season, sources have told Football Insider.
The 22-year-old has attracted interest from a number of top clubs across Europe in recent months, and was the subject of an eight-figure offer from Monaco in January.
Rangers turned down the French club’s advances during the mid-season window but may now struggle to deter offers should they arrive in the summer.
As I revealed on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Transfer Insider podcast, Gassama could now leave Rangers after they missed out on Champions League qualification.
Danny Rohl is hopeful of keeping his best players at Ibrox this summer but may now be unable to do so as Rangers prepare for a busy transfer window.
Breaking news on latest signings, departures, and contract news from the Ibrox boardroom.
Football Insider revealed ahead of the January transfer window that Rangers had no plans to sell Gassama and instead wanted to keep him at the club long-term.
They then turned down an offer from Monaco which would have seen him join on loan until the end of the season with a £10million obligation to buy.
While they were able to reject the advances mid-way through the season, their resolve may not be as strong this summer, placing clubs on high alert.
Speaking on the Transfer Insider podcast, I explained: “It’s going to be a big summer ahead for Rangers. I’m expecting a lot of players to come and go at Ibrox.
“Gassama, as you said, there was bit of interest around him in January. I expect to see that resurface in the summer window.
“Missing out on the league title and potential qualification to the Champions League will be a big blow to Rangers.
“It makes them susceptible to offers from other clubs for their players and they might find it tough to turn down offers like they did in the January window.
“Danny Rohl would like to keep hold of the player if he can and he’d be looking to add to a squad and not weaken it.
“He’s under contract until 2029, but as I said, missing out on Champions League and everything else will make them susceptible, maybe to other clubs maybe moving for some of their best players.”
Gassama may not be the only Rangers player on his way out of Ibrox this summer after what was a disappointing end to their league campaign.
Having sat just one point behind Hearts before the league split, they ended up finishing third, meaning they will either have to qualify for the Europa League or Conference League.
Football Insider revealed on 22 May that Rangers are preparing for a busy transfer window and hope to back Rohl with multiple incoming deals.
However, they are also preparing to lose players, with fringe players expected to be moved on while their best players continue to attract interest from elsewhere.
Interest in Gassama is expected to follow for a number of other key players including the likes of Nicolas Raskin and Emmanuel Fernandez who could be tempted away.
