Reports in Italy indicate that Inter are increasingly likely to make Josep Martinez their first-choice goalkeeper in 2026-27 instead of turning to the transfer market to bring in a new no.1, but the Nerazzurri are still hoping to bring in a back-up option to replace the departing Yann Sommer.

The Champions of Italy will look to rejuvenate their defensive unit during the summer transfer window, including their options between the sticks. Sommer has been Inter’s first choice for the last three years, but is out of contract in June and is expected to leave the club at the age of 37.

Inter had been linked with a move to sign Tottenham’s Guglielmo Vicario for large chunks of the 2025-26 campaign, but recent updates indicate that they are instead more likely to promote Josep Martinez, who has largely had to settle for a role as an understudy over the last two campaigns.

The recently-crowned champions of Italy will still be in the market for a new goalkeeper this summer, but Wednesday’s reports suggest that they will be on the lookout for a new no.2 rather than a no.1.

According to reports from Calciomercato.com, Lazio’s Ivan Provedel is in ‘pole position’ to become the new back-up goalkeeper at Inter from 2026-27 onwards.

The 32-year-old has spent the last four seasons at the Stadio Olimpico and was named as the division’s best goalkeeper in the 2022-23 Serie A awards.

He has been unavailable for the last 10 rounds of Serie A fixtures after having surgery on his shoulder at the beginning of March. That has allowed Edoardo Motta to ‘audition’ for the role of Lazio’s no.1, and given that Provedel has just over a year remaining on his contract, the Biancocelesti could be minded to let him go while they are still able to recoup a fee.
