SAFA & Co. Blast UEFA Boss Over 'Uninteresting' WC Claims
SAFA and 12 other nations have hit back at UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin after he labelled several 2026 FIFA World Cup matches "uninteresting," releasing a joint statement defending the tournament's expanded format.
SAFA, along with a host of other national federations, has firmly rejected comments made by UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin, who claimed that a number of 2026 FIFA World Cup matches have been "completely uninteresting."

A group of nations, perhaps unsurprisingly, took offence to the remarks made by the 58-year-old, banding together in a show of solidarity to release a joint response rebuking what the European football chief had said.
According to the BBC, Ceferin used a conference in Ljubljana, his hometown in Slovenia, to argue that the expansion of the World Cup from 32 to 48 teams has come at the cost of quality, with several matches lacking the appeal of previous tournaments.
"We have a lot of matches that are completely uninteresting," Ceferin is reported to have said.
"On the other hand, even small countries can participate and feel the pulse of the World Cup, which is a big thing."
Meanwhile, the football associations of Cape Verde, Curacao, Uzbekistan, Congo, Haiti, Algeria, Tunisia, Morocco, Egypt, Ghana, Senegal, Cote d'Ivoire and South Africa have released a joint statement expressing their shock and disappointment at Ceferin's comments.
"We respectfully but firmly reject these comments," the statement read. "For our countries, there is no such thing as an unimportant World Cup match.
"For Cape Verde, Curacao and Uzbekistan, qualification for the FIFA World Cup represents a historic achievement and the realisation of a dream shared by generations.
"For nations such as Congo and Haiti, returning to football's biggest stage after a long absence carries a special meaning for millions of supporters who have waited years, and in some cases decades, for this moment.
"To suggest that these matches are somehow less important is deeply disappointing and fails to recognise the efforts, sacrifices and aspirations of players, coaches, clubs, football leaders and supporters across the world."
The statement continued by highlighting the years of work behind every qualification, and the millions of fans whose hopes rest on their nations' World Cup campaigns.
"Behind every qualification stands years of work and investment. Behind every national team stand entire communities and millions of people who see football as a source of pride, hope and unity.
"Football does not belong to a select group of nations. Its strength comes from its universality. The FIFA World Cup is the world's greatest football competition precisely because it brings together different cultures, different histories and different football journeys.
"For many countries, participation in the FIFA World Cup is not only a sporting achievement. It is a moment that inspires a generation, accelerates football development and creates memories that last a lifetime."
The federations closed their statement with a firm reaffirmation of their stance, insisting that every nation at the tournament has earned its place.
"We believe that every nation that qualifies deserves respect. Every team has earned its place on merit. Every supporter has the right to dream. Every match carries meaning for millions of people around the world.

"We therefore reject the UEFA President's comments and reaffirm our belief that the growth of football must continue to create opportunities, inspire new generations and strengthen the truly global nature of our game.
"Every team qualified on merit. Every match matters."
