SAFA has officially stepped into uncharted territory after announcing a groundbreaking new partnership with Chiliz Group, the blockchain company behind the popular fan engagement platform Socios.com.
The collaboration will see the South Africa men's senior national team launch its very own official Fan Token™, placing Bafana Bafana alongside international football heavyweights such as Argentina, Portugal and Italy, all of whom already offer digital fan tokens to supporters around the world.
The landmark announcement marks a major moment for African football, as SAFA looks to embrace digital innovation and create a more interactive experience for supporters both locally and globally.
According to the association, the new "$SAFA Fan Token™" will allow fans to engage with the national team in entirely new ways through the Socios.com app.
Supporters will be able to participate in polls influencing certain team-related decisions, while also earning reward points through app activity and token staking that can be redeemed for exclusive experiences, merchandise and fan rewards.
Speaking on the partnership, SAFA CEO Lydia Monyepao described the move as an important step in modernising the federation's relationship with supporters.

"This partnership represents a new chapter in SAFA's journey into Web3, Blockchains and Fan Tokens, to reward exclusive experiences to our passionate fans not only across South Africa but also as we grow our fan base globally," said Monyepao.
She added that Bafana Bafana's growing international profile, particularly ahead of next month's FIFA World Cup opening match in Mexico City, made this the ideal moment to expand the team's digital footprint.
"Bafana Bafana has always been the people's team on the African continent, and through this collaboration, we are exploring innovative ways for fans to be part of the team's global journey," she explained.
Fan Tokens are digital assets built on Chiliz Chain blockchain technology and are already used by more than 70 major sports organisations worldwide. Through the Socios.com platform, users can purchase and interact with the tokens using Chiliz ($CHZ), the platform's digital currency.
However, SAFA also stressed that the tokens are intended purely for fan engagement and entertainment purposes — not as investment products.
In its official statement, the association clarified that Fan Tokens do not hold financial or monetary value, and that reward points earned through staking cannot be converted into cash or traded outside the app ecosystem.
The statement also outlined the platform's staking and cooling-off processes, warning supporters that token prices may still fluctuate while assets are staked and temporarily inaccessible.
Further details surrounding the official launch of the "$SAFA Fan Token™," including pricing, launch dates and early supporter benefits, are expected to be announced in the coming weeks.
