Sources: Man United set for multi-million boost as Ruben Amorim in advanced talks to agree deal

Manchester United will save millions in compensation if Ruben Amorim accepts an offer to become AC Milan's next manager, sources have told Football Insider.

Amorim was sacked by the Premier League giants in January in a move that the club have confimed cost them £16.7million in compensation, and the 41-year-old is still receiving payment from his former club.

However, the former Sporting boss is now in advanced talks to be appointed by AC Milan, with decision-makers at Old Trafford to be handed a route out of paying him any more if a deal is finalised.

Man United sacked Amorim in January after he criticised the club's board, following a 1-1 draw with Leeds United that had left his team sixth in the Premier League.

The Portuguese manager was replaced by Michael Carrick, initially on an interim basis until the end of the season.

The former midfielder has now been appointed permanently, after leading his side to a third-place finish in the Premier League.

Amorim arrived at Old Trafford in 2024 as a young, exciting manager who had undoubtedly succeeded at Sporting CP.

Man United's next manager had lost just 33 games from 230 in charge of the Portuguese side and was something different.

In Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Ralf Rangnick and Erik ten Hag, decision-makers had opted for more experienced, older managers.

Amorim represented a younger, fresher face and it was hoped that he would foster a renewed mentality at Old Trafford.

There were positive moments in that first campaign - Amorim's team beat Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium in December and pulled off a staggering late comeback against Lyon to progress in the Europa League.

An end to the season that saw defeat to Tottenham in the final and a 15th-place finish in the Premier League felt like a big blow, however, and the feelings grew at the start of the next season.

A big summer could not overturn a second-round Carabao Cup exit to Grimsby Town and the expelling of Kobbie Mainoo, with Amorim's reign eventually coming to an end in January.

AC Milan have had three managers since Stefano Pioli's exit in June 2024.

Paulo Fonseca, Sergio Conceicao and Massimiliano Allegri have all attempted and failed to get the Italians back on track.

Decision-makers have now turned to Amorim, after failing to convince both Andoni Iraola and Oliver Glasner to take the job.

The 41-year-old now faces the most important period of his managerial career, as he attempts to repair his reputation by rebuilding a broken club.
