'This Time There Is Far Less Star Quality in Bafana Squad'

A detailed analysis of Bafana Bafana's squad has suggested that the current generation of South African players possesses significantly less star power than the teams that represented the nation at previous FIFA World Cups.

According to Opta Analyst, Hugo Broos' charges are "unlikely to blow anyone away in North America this summer" despite arriving at the tournament on the back of an encouraging run of qualifying results.

Why Are Questions Being Asked About South Africa's Attack?

The report highlighted concerns over Bafana's attacking output, pointing out that while South Africa scored 17 goals during the CAF World Cup qualifying campaign, eight nations found the back of the net more often.

Opta also noted that Bafana's expected goals (xG) tally stood at just 12.9, suggesting the side relied heavily on clinical finishing rather than consistently creating a high volume of clear-cut opportunities.

The report went on to compare the current squad to previous South African World Cup generations.

"Foster, as the only member of the squad who plays in England, carries much of their hopes going forward, but he isn't revered or given as much credit as the South African stars of years gone by.

"Shaun Bartlett, Benni McCarthy, Lucas Radebe, Quinton Fortune all played in the Premier League while representing South Africa at the 1998 and 2002 World Cups, while Steven Pienaar and Kagisho Dikgacoi were both in the squad in 2010.

"This time, there is far less star quality. Nobody in the nation's top 10 cap-holders is still around, while veteran Themba Zwane (12 goals) and Foster (10) are the only squad members with 10+ international goals. No one scored more than twice in World Cup qualifying for South Africa."

What Is Bafana Bafana's Biggest Strength?

While questions may exist about star power and attacking firepower, Opta believes South Africa's greatest asset lies at the opposite end of the pitch.

The report highlighted the discipline, organisation and resilience that have become trademarks of Hugo Broos' side.

"Teamwork, hard work, and resilience will be on the menu this summer. In 10 World Cup qualifiers, they allowed their opponents just 5.2 xG and conceded only six goals. They only faced an average of 6.3 shots per game, and just 2.0 shots on target per game."

Those numbers underline just how difficult Bafana have become to break down during the Belgian coach's tenure.

Can Oswin Appollis And Relebohile Mofokeng Spark South Africa's Attack?

Although South Africa may lack the household names of previous generations, Opta identified Orlando Pirates duo Oswin Appollis and Relebohile Mofokeng as players capable of exciting supporters during the tournament.

The report highlighted Appollis' ability to drive forward with the ball and carry his side up the pitch at speed, noting that few players in the Betway Premiership were as effective when progressing attacks and creating opportunities through ball-carrying actions.

However, perhaps the player generating the most excitement is Mofokeng.

"That one player was teammate at club and international level, Relebohile Mofokeng, who is probably the player the fans are most excited about this summer," the Opta report continued.

"The 21-year-old has been handed the number 10 shirt after scoring 10 goals to lead the Orlando Pirates to the Premiership title, and expectations are high about what he can do in North America. He also topped the South African top flight last season for assists."

Will Teamwork Be Enough For Bafana Bafana?

While South Africa may not boast the same collection of globally recognised stars as previous World Cup squads, Opta's assessment suggests that organisation, discipline and collective effort could once again be the foundation of any success in North America.

Whether that formula will be enough to navigate a difficult Group A remains to be seen, but Bafana Bafana will head into the tournament determined to prove their doubters wrong.
