Portugal centre-back Tomás Araújo has praised Nigeria for providing a stern test after the Seleção edged the Super Eagles 2-1 in their final warm-up match ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup in Leiria.
The Benfica defender, speaking after the closely contested encounter, admitted that Nigeria’s intensity and organisation made life difficult for Portugal in several phases of the game.
“It was a very good test in preparation for the World Cup, as were others. We gave a good response,” he said as quoted by Sapo.
Portugal, who fielded a strong side featuring several established stars, were pushed throughout by a Nigeria team under head coach Eric Chelle that created problems on the break and matched their European opponents in spells of the match.
Araújo also acknowledged that Portugal did not fully control possession as they had hoped, but insisted the experience would be valuable in fine-tuning the team ahead of the tournament.
“At times we didn't have the control of the ball as we wanted, but we now have a week to improve that and I think we will be ready at the start of the World Cup,” he added.
The match served as Portugal’s final competitive test before the global showpiece, offering manager Roberto Martínez an opportunity to assess his squad’s balance, rhythm and defensive structure against a physically demanding Nigerian side.
Despite the defeat, Nigeria’s performance drew positive attention for its discipline and attacking transitions, while Portugal ultimately secured the win through a late decisive goal.
