Werder Bremen head of professional football, Peter Niemeyer have provided a positive update on the fitness of Nigerian defender Felix Agu ahead of the forthcoming announcement of Nigeria’s squad for the Unity Cup tournament in London.

The versatile fullback has endured an injury-disrupted campaign, missing several matches for the Bundesliga side as well as Nigeria’s 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) campaign in Morocco due to fitness concerns.

The Nigeria international recently missed Werder Bremen’s last four Bundesliga matches against Hamburg, Stuttgart, Augsburg, and Hoffenheim due to muscle problems.

His injury setback had cast doubt over his potential participation in the upcoming Unity Cup tournament, but Niemeyer has now confirmed that the Nigerian defender has regained full fitness.

Speaking to DeichStube, Niemeyer revealed that Agu could be available for Werder Bremen’s Bundesliga clash against Borussia Dortmund at the Weserstadion.

"Felix is healthy again and therefore a candidate for the position. Both (Agu and Isaac Schmidt) are thus in contention for a starting spot," Niemeyer said.

The update will come as encouraging news for Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle, who is expected to unveil his squad for the Unity Cup in the coming days.

Agu will now be hopeful of securing a return to the Super Eagles setup and making his first appearance for Nigeria in 2026 after his prolonged spell on the sidelines.
