Several players have gained thousands, and in some cases millions, of followers on social media following standout performances at the 2026 World Cup, co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
Just one round into the group stage, several previously unknown World Cup players saw their follower counts climb quickly as clips from their performances went viral across social media platforms.
After a spectacular performance against Brazil, 18-year-old midfielder Ayyoub Bouaddi saw his Instagram following reportedly jump from 135,000 to 1.1 million within days, including around 700,000 in just 48 hours.
The young midfielder played 90 minutes against Brazil, completing 60 of 66 passes (91%), winning 3 of 5 dribbles, making 4 tackles, and recording 6 defensive contributions and 6 recoveries, while also winning 9 of 13 ground duels and completing his only long ball attempt.
The Atlas Lion, now valued at around €50 million, has also drawn the attention of several top European clubs, including Arsenal, Liverpool, Tottenham Hotspur, Real Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain, and Chelsea.
Cape Verde goalkeeper Vozinha:
The goalkeeper Vozinha (full name Josimar José Évora Dias) broke the internet on Monday after helping Cape Verde hold 2026 World Cup favorites Spain to a 0-0 draw.
The 40-year-old Vozinha, the second-oldest player to make his World Cup debut, saw his account rise from 50K to nearly 11.9 million followers after Spain’s 27 attempts on goal, during which he made seven saves and kept a clean sheet.
He faced 1.46 expected goals (xG), won all his aerial duels, made 10 throws, and completed 29 passes.
New Zealand defender Tim Payne has seen his Instagram following explode ahead of the FIFA World Cup, reportedly rising from just under 5,000 followers to around 5.9 million after a viral campaign.
The surge began when Argentine influencer Valen Scarsini, known as “El Scarso,” asked fans to follow him as part of a campaign to highlight the least-known player at the tournament. The idea spread quickly across social media.
The campaign quickly turned the 32-year-old All Whites defender into one of the competition’s most unexpected viral names.
