Kaizer Chiefs ended their Betway Premiership season with a 1-0 loss to Chippa United at Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
With third spot already secured, the Amakhosi coaches opted to give some opportunities to the younger players in the squad. Diski Challenge goalkeeper Takalani Mazhamba was given his debut for the Chiefs first team while Naledi Hlongwane, Luke Baartman and Mfundo Vilakazi were also given starts.
Chippa, meanwhile, came into the clash clear of the automatic relegation but they were still in danger of falling into the play-off as new coach Brandon Truter took the helm on the final day of the season.
The decision to include the young players certainly rejuvenated the side in the early stages, with Baartman looking to make the most of his opportunities as he was a big threat on the flank and managed to carve out some lively efforts at goal.
However, all that dominance would count for nothing as the Chilli Boys took the lead in the 33rd minute when Sammy Seabi found the back of the net from close-range after being set up by Justice Figareido.
There was more trouble for the Soweto giants before the interval as defender Aden McCarthy was forced off with an injury and replaced by Given Msimango.
Despite being a goal behind, the Soweto giants continued to press for goals in the second period as the lively Baartman continued to cause havoc in the final third as he forced Msibi into a fine save while he also squandered a headed chance just before the hour mark.
However, the Chiefs co-coaches opted for experience over youth with 25 minutes left on the clock as Hlongwane and Baartman were brought off, as Gaston Sirino and Tashreeq Morris were introduced to help overturn the deficit.
Try as they may, the Soweto giants were unable to find a way back into the contest despite dominating possession for large parts of the second half as they end the season with a defeat, although third place was already secured.
On the other hand, Truter has guided the Chilli Boys to safety on the final day of the season and they can now look forward to another season in the top-flight.
