Downs had already laid the foundation with a 1-0 win at home in the first leg a week ago.

For years, Masandawana struggled to get over the line in the Champions League despite consistently reaching the latter stages of the competition, including the semi-finals and finals.

That continental drought had become a major talking point amongst the club's supporters and legends, who were desperate to see Sundowns crowned African champions once again.

The arrival of Portuguese head coach Miguel Cardoso, who replaced Manqoba Mngqithi in December 2024, proved to be a turning point for the Tshwane giants.

Although Cardoso fell short in domestic competitions, he made his mark on the continent by guiding the club to back-to-back Champions League finals before finally delivering the coveted trophy this season.

Sundowns touched down in Mzansi on Monday night with the trophy in hand, as scores of supporters gathered at OR Tambo International Airport to welcome the newly-crowned African champions home.

Players, fans and club officials shared emotional scenes of joy, relief and celebration after finally reclaiming continental supremacy and earning the long-awaited second star.
