The Springboks have suffered yet another injury setback, with reports suggesting that loose forward Kwagga Smith is out for the year.

According to News24, Smith won’t play in 2026 due to a knee injury he sustained while playing for Shizuoka BlueRevs in Japan earlier this month.

Smith is a critical part of the Springbok setup, with his Sevens background giving him the ability not only to play on the flank and at No 8, but also to cover backline positions.

That allowed Rassie Erasmus to often load his substitutes in a 6-2 or, at times, 7-1 split.

A two-time Rugby World Cup winner, Smith made his debut for the Boks in 2018 and has, to date, played 63 Test matches.

His injury possibly opens the door for several other players, however, including Cameron Hanekom, Evan Roos, Vincent Tshituka and possibly the Lions breakout star this season, Siba Mahashe.
