Midfield general Teboho Mokoena was the hero of the night, stepping up under immense pressure to coolly slot home the 83rd-minute equaliser.
The emotional midfielder dedicated the strike to his late grandfather, revealing he felt his presence on the pitch ahead of the tense encounter.
However, it was a bittersweet night for the 29-year-old, now officially ruled out of the final group fixture - a must-win affair against South Korea on Thursday.
He picked up a costly yellow card during the opening half of the match. Having already been booked in the opening 2-0 defeat against Mexico, the caution triggers an automatic one-match suspension.
"I think Teboho is and has always been a very good player. In a game match like that, sometimes it is very difficult to control your emotions," reflected Broos post-match.
"So, this was, if I can say, a stupid yellow card that he picked up, but it happens. It is something he needs to learn at this level.
"This is a team with not much experience outside of the African continent. We will learn a lot from the games we play here. It should be very good if we progress to the second round, and those things will disappear, I'm very sure of it - showing emotion and getting yellow cards and those kinds of things.

"There is also a good side because it shows that Teboho's mentality is very good. So, I am more pleased about that than upset at the yellow card that he got."
Bafana now sit fourth on the table standings in Group A, with a point from two matches. They take on South Korea at Estadio Montgomery on Thursday.
