Canadian Soccer Association face big fine after incident in 6-0 win vs Qatar - Ex-FIFA official

FIFA are likely to retrospectively punish Canada and Qatar in the coming days following "unacceptable" scenes at the full-time whistle.

That is according to former PGMOL chief and ex-FIFA referee, Keith Hackett, who exclusively told Football Insider that the teams have beamed ugly scenes around the world after the clash on Thursday, 18 June.

Jesse Marsch's side all-but-confirmed their spot in the knockout stages with a sensational 6-0 win over Qatar at the BC Place Vancouver Stadium, but it quickly turned sour at full-time.

In a game where Julen Lopetegui's team went down to nine men, with one of the challenges causing Ismael Kone to break his leg, tempers flared on the sidelines.

With Qatar needing all three points against Bosnia and Herzegovina, they need a miracle to keep their tournament alive, and FIFA could be about to rub salt into the wounds.

It is unclear exactly what started the mass confrontation, but as players shook hands, everything kicked off between the staff on the sidelines, with players running to get involved.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Hackett has urged FIFA to take action to discourage any other teams repeating these scenes on the world's biggest stage.

"These are unacceptable images to be beaming around the world. FIFA's disciplinary panel cannot ignore or accept what took place," he said.

"I expect action to be taken in the next few days to ensure that this damaging image is now allowed to happen in future games.

"I suspect that both teams will receive a hefty fine for their unacceptable actions."

Referee Cristian Marcelo Garay Reyes did well to keep emotions bubbling over during the game, and it was the staff members who failed to control themselves at full-time.

It is immediately apparent that something was wrong following Assim Madibo's challenge on Canada's No.8, and the guilty party was incredibly distraught.

Kone had clearly broken his leg, needing to be stretchered off in the 56th minute, and the referee felt he had no other choice but to show a red card.

It is not yet known how serious this could be for the midfielder, but his 2026 World Cup journey is undoubtedly over due to the incident.

Kone has been a force to be reckoned with in the opening World Cup games, so not having him in the middle of the park will be a huge blow for Marsch's team.
