Celtic plot move to sign ‘unknown’ striker as Martin O’Neill transfer plan revealed
Celtic are lining up a move to sign Aarau striker Elias Filet as Martin O'Neill aims to add more firepower to his attacking options.
O'Neill was confirmed as Celtic's new permanent boss earlier this week following his successful interim spell in charge.
He led the Hoops to a Premiership and Scottish Cup double last term despite a lack of genuine attacking depth.
The Celtic boss tried to bolster his striker options with the signings of Tomas Cvancara and Junior Adamu in January, but Daizen Maeda emerged as the star of their triumphs with some fine form at the end of the season
As I revealed on the latest edition of Football Insider's Transfer Insider podcast, Filet is on Celtic's radar ahead of the summer window as O'Neill aims to add more physicality to his ranks.
Filet registered 20 goals and five assists in 35 Swiss Challenge League matches for Aarau last season.
The Frenchman would be a budget option for the Hoops to bolster their lacking striker ranks which could soon be dealt a further blow by Maeda's exit.
Filet was named the Swiss Challenge League Player of the Year last month following his standout 2025-26 campaign.
Aarau recently missed out on promotion to the Super League with a play-off defeat to Grasshopper, so are more likely to sell the 24-year-old to the Hoops this summer.
Speaking on the Transfer Insider podcast, I explained: "He’s a bit of an unknown, so it would be a gamble if Celtic were to pursue a move for Filet. He's done well at Aarau, obviously in the Swiss second tier, so it could be a bit of a step up for him making that move to Scotland.
"He's the type of forward that Celtic are looking at, he's a big strong forward, six foot one."
O'Neill will need to sign a new goalkeeper this summer after Kasper Schmeichel retired due to a his serious injury.
Celtic have been heavily linked with Go Ahead Eagles stopper De Busser, who recently admitted that he plans to "take the next step" in his career this summer.
Sources have exclusively revealed to Football Insider that De Busser wants to move to Celtic in the coming months, so O'Neill will now make the final call on the move.
