Manager Gregg Berhalter has even publicly revealed that the club is in talks with Polish striker Robert Lewandowski, who recently left FC Barcelona, as part of a plan to bring in a marquee signing.
Among those being courted by Chicago were Lewandowski, Kevin De Bruyne and Bernardo Silva. It now appears that Chicago's hopes of signing the latter have diminished.
According to journalist Fabrizio Romano, Bernardo Silva has agreed to join Real Madrid as a free agent.
The Portuguese midfielder left Manchester City at the end of the 2025/26 season after his contract expired.
It is reported that he will sign a two-year deal with Los Blancos, with his services said to have been requested by new Santiago Bernabéu manager Jose Mourinho.
According to the Daily Mail, Chicago Fire were offering the Portugal international a three-year deal with figures of up to $12 million (R195 million) a year.
