Should Mamelodi Sundowns go on to win the CAF Champions League, Keanu Cupido's heroics will live long in the memory.

The Sundowns technical team made the decision to play the former Cape Town City defender despite the serious injury he picked up against Kaizer Chiefs in the Betway Premiership almost three weeks ago.

At the time, Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso said Cupido's arm was broken, but he returned to training the week leading up to the Champions League first leg clash against Moroccan outfit AS FAR, which was played at Loftus Stadium this past weekend.

Speculation over whether or not he would play was put to bed when his name was included in the starting line-up for their first leg clash and he played an important part in ensuring the Tshwane giants did not concede. Sundowns registered a 1-0 win and have 90 more minutes to finally get their hands on the biggest prize in club football on the continent.

"I had to take injection, but anything for the badge. If the team needs me, I have to be there, through pain or whatever. I am happy to be on the field again. It's my happy place," Cupido told media after the first leg clash on Sunday.

"I am just lucky to be back on the field and I have to thank bra Saki. He said I should mention him. I should thank him and the Almighty and also the doctors at the team for helping me in those few days. They really showed up and I just want to say thank you to them as well."

Sundowns could have put themselves in a better position for the second leg, but Cupido has taken the positives and will be looking to play a key role again to lead the club to glory on the continent.

"It wasn't that tough. I think we made it difficult for ourselves. We had good opportunities to kill the game off, but at the end of the day we still won with a 1-0 victory. Keeping a clean was also important for us."

Sundowns will take on AS FAR in the second leg in Rabat on Sunday.
