Sunderland manager Regis Le Bris has disclosed that he’s eager to see his team finish on a high ahead of Sunday’s clash against Chelsea in the last game of the Premier League season.

Sunderland needs a win to secure 8th place, while Chelsea seeks to seal European qualification following a recent win over Tottenham.

Despite the home team’s ambition, they face the historical disadvantage of not completing the double over their West London visitors since the 2000-01 season.

This campaign presents the Black Cats with an undeniable opportunity to end that wait, especially since the capital club may have mixed feelings about participation in next season’s Conference League.

Although the Blues’ motivation is uncertain, failure to win away from home since early March’s 4-1 success at Europa League winners Aston Villa suggests that travelling supporters will be more cautious than optimistic heading into their trip to the Stadium of Light.

In a chat with the club’s website, the French tactician urged Sunderland to maintain an aggressive, high-energy approach to finish the 2025-26 Premier League season strongly.

.“This game is a good opportunity to celebrate the season at home in front of our fans,” Le Bris told Sunderland website.

“At the minute, we have 51 points and the opportunity to get three more, which is impressive for our first season back in the Premier League.

“We have grown, learned, improved and struggled at times which is normal in the league. If everything aligns elsewhere, maybe something exceptional can happen, but it’s not fully in our hands.”

Le Bris also confirmed that Omar Alderete is a doubt after limping off during the win on Merseyside, with the defender now being closely assessed before a final decision is made on his availability.

“It might be difficult for him – we’ll make a late decision tomorrow after training,” he told the media on Friday.

“Chemsdine picked up a muscle injury in training and he will be unavailable.”
