Romanian giants FCSB may have handed Siyabonga Ngezana a new contract, but questions remain over whether the club are already positioning themselves for a future without the Bafana Bafana defender.

Ngezana’s stock has continued to rise in Europe following another impressive campaign in Romania, with interest in the former Kaizer Chiefs defender believed to be growing across the continent.

The 28-year-old’s previous deal was due to expire in June 2027, but FCSB have now added another 12 months to keep him contracted until June 2028.

On the surface, it appears to be a major show of faith from the Romanian heavyweights. However, the timing of the extension could also suggest the club are protecting their long-term investment amid growing transfer interest.

FCSB have remained reluctant to sell Ngezana despite enquiries from abroad, but with the defender entering a critical stage of his contract cycle, the extension gives the club far stronger leverage should suitors come knocking again.

It is understood to be a win-win situation for both parties.

For Ngezana, it means improved terms and continued stability in an environment where he has flourished since leaving Chiefs. For FCSB, it potentially opens the door to command a significantly higher transfer fee for a player they signed for around R12 million just a few seasons ago.

The one-time European champions are unlikely to want to lose one of their defensive leaders cheaply, especially after the South African international established himself as a key figure in the squad.

Since arriving in Romania, Ngezana has featured in 106 matches for FCSB, contributing three goals and two assists while helping the club compete domestically and in Europe.

With interest in his services not going away anytime soon, the latest contract extension could be less about keeping Ngezana forever and more about ensuring FCSB remain fully in control of what happens next.
