FIFA has highlighted the squad unveiled by Morocco coach Mohamed Ouahbi for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, saying the Atlas Lions will enter the tournament with a mix of experienced players from the historic 2022 campaign and emerging talents reflecting the growing depth of Moroccan football.
In a report published after the squad announcement, FIFA noted that Ouahbi, who took charge of the national team in March following the departure of Walid Regragui, selected 26 players and three reserves for the tournament.
The report pointed out that nine players from Morocco’s historic 2022 World Cup squad, which became the first African and Arab team to reach the semifinals, retained their places in the team. Among them are Yassine Bounou, Sofyan Amrabat, Nayef Aguerd and Achraf Hakimi.
FIFA also noted that Hakimi is set to play in the UEFA Champions League final with Paris Saint-Germain on May 30 before joining Morocco’s World Cup preparations.
The governing body drew particular attention to the inclusion of Ayyoub Bouaddi, who is set to make his World Cup debut with Morocco. FIFA cited Ouahbi’s praise for the young midfielder’s technical qualities, mentality and ability to integrate quickly into the squad, describing him as one of the standout prospects of the national team’s new project.
At the same time, FIFA highlighted the absence of Sofiane Boufal from the final list despite his return to the national team camp in May. Ouahbi reportedly explained that the decision was due to intense competition in attacking midfield positions and followed extensive scouting and evaluation of players over recent months.
FIFA concluded by noting that Morocco will compete in Group C of the 2026 World Cup alongside Brazil, Scotland and Haiti — a group the organization described as difficult.
Nevertheless, FIFA said the Atlas Lions head into the tournament determined to continue making history and to confirm their place among world football’s elite.
