Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard could be about to play his final game for the club in the Champions League final.
According to talkSport on May 27th, Mikel Arteta is keen to lure Aston Villa star Morgan Rogers away from the club, with “preliminary talks with his advisors” having already taken place.
Arsenal would rival Manchester United, Chelsea and PSG for Rogers’ signature, with Aston Villa set to demand over £80million for the 23-year-old.
A new number 10 arriving at Arsenal could spell the end for Odegaard, whose season was disrupted by a series of injuries.
Arsenal’s high transfer spend in recent seasons under Arteta means a high-profile star is likely to be sold this summer in order to ensure the club stay within financial perimeters.
Breaking news on deals in progress, signings, departures, and contract news from the Emirates boardroom.
The future of winger Gabriel Martinelli is also uncertain at Arsenal this summer, but Rogers would not be a like-for-like replacement for the winger, meaning Odgeaard would be the obvious choice to depart.
Helped by starting all but one game for Aston Villa this season, Rogers recorded considerably more goal contributions than Odegaard across the 2025-26 campaign.
Despite Arsenal’s title win, it was a criticism of the Gunners that they did not score enough goals from open play during the latter stages of the season.
Whilst Odegaard is able to bring composure to the middle of the park, Rogers would be seen as an upgraded attacking threat.
Rogers’ arrival would also be seen as Arteta building for the future, with 27-year-old Odegaard having been in north London for five years, and he may have already reached his peak.
Arteta may need to reconsider his transfer plans as former Manchester City financial advisor Stefan Borson told Football Insider previously that Arsenal could find it difficult to sell Odegaard.
There could be a lack of options in the market as clubs may not be willing to splash out up to £80m to sign the Norwegian.
The Gunners signed Odegaard for £30m, meaning they could net a sizeable profit if they were to sell him for as much as £80m.
Any deal to sign Rogers could be dependent on a couple of outgoings first at Emirates Stadium, but Arsenal are in no rush as the midfielder is about to head out to America to compete with England at the World Cup.
