How Belgian media reacted to Aston Villa star Youri Tielemans' performance vs Egypt
Belgian media were not impressed by Aston Villa star Youri Tielemans' performance in their 1-1 draw against Egypt at the World Cup.
Tielemans enjoyed a successful season at Villa as he helped them lift silverware for the first time since 1996.
The 29-year-old opened the scoring in the Europa League final as Unai Emery's side defeated Freiburg 3-0 in Istanbul.
His attention has since turned to international duties, as he captains Belgium for the first time at a major tournament.
Tielemans started in midfield alongside Amadou Onana in their World Cup opener against Egypt on Monday night, but struggled to make much of an impression.
Rudi Garcia's side needed a Mohamed Hany own goal to clinch a 1-1 draw after Emam Ashour had opened the scoring early on.
They will face Iran in their second group game on Sunday, 21 June, with many expecting a much-improved performance in comparison.
Tielemans was appointed as Belgium's new permanent captain last September after Garcia rotated the armband in his first few games in charge.
He is a regular starter for the Red Devils and featured for the full 95 minutes against Egypt during his 86th cap for his country.
Tielemans created three chances and completed 36 passes throughout the game, but struggled defensively and seemed to leave gaps in the middle with Villa teammate Onana.
Footmercato rated his performance a five out of 10 and said: "Although the midfield struggled tonight, Tielemans put in a decent performance. Starting in the double pivot alongside Onana, he provided cover, stability and a few shots on goal, including a dangerous left-footed strike, though none proved decisive.
"It was a solid performance, if not a standout one, although he did make a difference in the closing stages of the match."
While Maxifoot felt he had a better game and wrote: "After a tentative start to the match, the Belgian captain gradually found his rhythm. He pushed further forward into the opposition’s box, and his long passes created several openings, particularly for the goal that was scored.
Belgian outlet RTBF were particularly critical of his performance, as they also gave him a five and said: "He was virtually invisible for an hour, but came close to equalising with one of his trademark half-volley strikes. It was his pass to Thomas Meunier that led to the equaliser. We expect much more from him as the tournament progresses.
Tielemans' influence on Emery's side did not wane last term as he registered two goals and seven assists in 35 appearances across all competitions.
He has just two years left on his contract at Villa Park, with doubts raised around his future in recent months ahead of the summer window.
Reports emerged in May that Villa were ready to accept an offer for the 29-year-old due to concerns over finances and a possible need to sell a key player.
Despite such rumours, sources have exclusively revealed to Football Insider that Tielemans has no plans to leave Villa and Emery is also keen to keep hold of him this summer.
