Sadiq Umar has cast doubt over his international future after revealing he is considering retirement from the Super Eagles in the wake of Nigeria's disappointing failure to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the United States, Mexico and Canada.
In a candid conversation with Radio France International Hausa, the striker revealed that no final decision has been made, stressing that his future with the national team will be assessed once the new season begins.
“I am thinking of retiring from the Nigerian national team, but I will make the final decision when the new season begins," he told Radio France International Hausa.
Nigeria’s failure to reach the World Cup has triggered debate across the football landscape, and Umar did not shy away from acknowledging the disappointment, even if he declined to point fingers or assign blame.
“I can’t really mention the cause of our failure, but that is behind us now. We just need to focus on the next World Cup, which will be in four years," he added.
His remarks reflect a forward already looking beyond the heartbreak, urging a reset in mentality as Nigeria prepares for a fresh qualification cycle targeting the 2030 tournament.
Questions were also raised about his prolonged absence from recent Super Eagles squads, with Umar offering an honest and restrained explanation that hinted more at competition than controversy.
“I was not called up. Maybe my profile is not the type they need, and there are other players doing well in the team because, as you know, Nigeria is blessed with abundant talent," he said.
The forward’s tone suggested acceptance rather than frustration, acknowledging the fierce competition for places in a Nigerian attack stacked with emerging and established talent.
Pressed further on whether age or motivation might influence a potential retirement decision, Umar pointed to personal reflection and long-term ambition as key factors shaping his thinking.
“There is still time for me to make the final decision on that. That is why I said I will wait for the new season to start before I decide, so I can think about what will help me focus on my career and last in football like Cristiano Ronaldo.”
For now, Umar’s international future remains suspended in uncertainty, with a final verdict expected after he evaluates his next steps at club level.
