The Magpies endured a forgettable season just gone, finishing firmly in the bottom half and leaving Eddie Howe likely needing to turn things around quickly to keep his job, even after a hugely successful reign overall.
Newcastle could do with rejuvenating parts of their squad ahead of the new season, and it seems as though they will snap up a handful of young talents as they look to get ahead of PSR rules. Bright young attacker Victor Muñoz appears to be a prime target, and the search for attacking talent may not end there.
According to the Express and Star, Newcastle remain interested in Wolves star Mateus Mané following the Midlands side's relegation to the Championship. The report claims Newcastle are long-term admirers of Mane, who the BBC lauded for 'bossing matches', but they are not alone in their interest.
According to the report, Borussia Dortmund, Eintracht Frankfurt, Juventus and others are showing interest this summer. It's likely to be an intense battle for the 18-year-old's signature, and such a battle will help Wolves command a bigger fee, which they may have struggled to do following relegation to the second tier.
Mané is one of the brightest talents currently playing in England, racking up 3 goals and 2 assists during his breakout season, keeping in mind he was an 18-year-old attacking midfielder for the worst team in the Premier League. The youngster caused a number of big sides problems, and he received plenty of praise for his efforts.
Now former Wolves boss Rob Edwards said of the youngster: “He finished his performance with a fantastic goal. He once again delivered a very bold display, playing with real commitment. He’s 18, but he’s almost like a little leader on the pitch. I think that’s contagious. I believe he influences others - with his energy, his enthusiasm.
"He’s truly a very bright talent, someone we should really admire. At the same time, we want to make sure we look after him."
Wolves are reportedly asking for £50million to sell Mané, well aware of the talent they have on their hands. Though, even with interest from elsewhere, there may be room to force that fee down given Wolves' relegation and their likely need to make some cash.
