Newcastle fans will love what Rob Edwards has said about Mateus Mane amid latest transfer talk
Newcastle United have been told exactly why they must accelerate a move for Mateus Mane by former Wolves manager Rob Edwards.
Eddie Howe needs to add quality and depth to his attacking options after such a disappointing 2025-26 campaign.
Anthony Gordon's departure and rumours around Harvey Barnes' future have heightened the need for new signings in the coming months.
According to a new report, Wolves starlet Mane is on Newcastle's radar after his breakthrough season at Molineux.
If any Magpies fans were unsure about the move, previous quotes from ex-Wolves manager Edwards should prove why he would be a shrewd addition to their ranks.
Edwards handed Mane his first senior start last December at 18-years-old, and he was one of a few positives for the Old Gold to take from their relegation campaign.
His own future is up in the air as it stands, with Howe ready to offer the youngster a route back into the Premier League next season.
The Express & Star have revealed that Newcastle have a long-standing interest in Mane and are considering a move for his services this summer.
Signing him will not be easy, as Borussia Dortmund and Eintracht Frankfurt are both monitoring the 18-year-old, and Juventus have also registered their interest.
Newcastle fans should be excited about their latest target's lofty potential, with Edwards singing his praises throughout last season.
After Mane scored his first senior goal against West Ham in January, he said: "He's put in another really brave performance, another selfless performance. He's 18, but he's almost like a little bit of a leader in there as well. I think it's infectious. I think he's rubbing off on people, his energy, his enthusiasm.
"He's a really bright talent and someone that we should be really excited about, but at the same time, we just want to try and look after him. What I love is his intelligence, his enthusiasm, his bravery and obviously then his technical quality is very good as well."
Later that month, Edwards praised the attacking midfielder by saying: "He's got a really good attitude, but he's affected games very, very well with his intensity and his selfless work, but then real moments of quality and bravery, which I think has rubbed off on the group as well."
Then in March, he also praised his maturity and said: "In a really humble way, he’s got a very good confidence about him, but an absolute unequivocal desire to work hard and carry out his job well. He will take on information and from what we have seen so far, if you tell him once, he will take that on board and go and do it as well. That’s a really special thing to have, especially for a young player."
Newcastle should clearly be heading to the front of the queue for Mane's services, but a deal will not come cheap this summer.
Sources have previously told Football Insider that Wolves want around £50million for Mane, with Liverpool and Man United both put off a move as a result.
It seems likely that the Molineux outfit will be forced to accept a lesser offer, given their relegation, and the north west duo remain favourites to land him this summer.
One of the UK's leading bookmakers has Liverpool and United as 2/1 joint-favourites to be the club he is contracted to after the summer window.
Arsenal come in at 3/1, while Chelsea and Man City are a way behind at odds of 8/1.
