'I've never won a trophy' - Chelle shares what Super Eagles stars told him before 2025 Afcon
Super Eagles manager Eric Chelle has revealed the emotional conversation he shared with his players ahead of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, disclosing how members of the squad rallied behind him after failure to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The Malian tactician opened up after Nigeria’s 2-0 victory over Zimbabwe in the Unity Cup tournament in London on Tuesday.
He reflected on the disappointment of missing out on World Cup qualification and the team’s determination to restore pride to the nation at the AFCON tournament in Morocco.
Nigeria eventually finished third at the continental tournament after defeating Egypt on penalties in the third-place playoff.
Speaking on the atmosphere within the squad before the biennial tournament, Chelle admitted that the players and coaching staff were under immense pressure following the setback in the World Cup qualifying campaign.
“It was difficult for us after losing the game, the playoffs for the World Cup,” Chelle disclosed at the post-match press conference. “It was difficult for us and we are looking for something to motivate the players.”
“We played the AFCON because we wanted to give some pleasure to Nigeria. It was not a question about the players, we were so sad because we didn't bring the qualification to Nigeria and we wanted to give them something better.”
Chelle also revealed a touching moment with the players, who reassured him of their support despite the pressure surrounding the national team.
“For me, it is difficult because at this moment I have never won a trophy. These players took my hand and said, "Coach, we should go together. We are ready to die with you and if something happens, we go together, if we win, we win together, if we lose, we lose together”.
Chelle added that the trust and unity within the squad played a major role in helping the team cope with expectations during the tournament.
“I am very happy for the trust that they gave me, you see that they take a lot of pressure during the AFCON and the reality is me too.”
The Malian tactician is now expected to continue rebuilding the squad as Nigeria prepares for future international competitions, including the next Africa Cup of Nations to be hosted by Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda.
