Nunez has endured a difficult time since moving to the Saudi Pro League with Al Hilal. He was even deregistered from the league to make way for the arrival of Karim Benzema.

Suggestions have been made that his contract could be terminated early, which would mean he will be a free agent during the summer transfer window.

The Uruguayan international signed for Al Hilal back in 2025 after an inconsistent period with Liverpool.

Nunez won a Premier League title at Anfield, becoming just the second Uruguayan to do so, following Diego Forlan with Manchester United.

Reports emerged earlier this week that Liverpool were closing in on a deal to bring Nunez back to Anfield this summer.

A journalist claimed that a deal is already done, but Nunez didn't want a deal to be announced due to him currently focusing on the World Cup.

Despite that, The Athletic's Pearce has now provided an update on the situation after speaking to senior Liverpool sources.

Pearce confirms that Liverpool sources insist that it is not the case that Nunez could return to Anfield after a spell in the Saudi Pro League.

It was certainly a short-lived dream for those who wanted to see Nunez back in a Liverpool shirt ahead of the 2026-2027 season.

Heading into the summer transfer window, it's safe to say that signing a centre forward shouldn't be at the top of Liverpool's priority list.

The Reds invested significantly in bringing Hugo Ekitike and Alexander Isak to the club last summer. Although Ekitike is currently on the treatment table due to an Achilles injury, he will return at some point next season, meaning Nunez could be third choice in the centre-forward position.

Isak and Ekitike are certainly a strong enough striker partnership, providing enough competition for the centre-forward role, meaning signing a striker would be fairly pointless in the upcoming window.
