Mateus Mane 'unhappy' at Wolves but told only 'extraordinary bid' will get him transfer
Mateus Mane has been left frustrated at Wolves amid strong transfer interest from Newcastle United.
That is according to former Aston Villa chief executive Keith Wyness, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, who believes that the 18-year-old has been left feeling aggrieved by the club's relegation and Rob Edwards' exit.
The Black Country outfit parted company with their boss earlier in June, and moved to replace him with Gil Vicente's Cesar Peixoto.
Wyness has suggested that Wolves are facing a major battle to secure an instant return to the Premier League, and need to keep hold of Mane if they are to have any chance.
The attacking midfielder burst onto the scene at first-team level last season, and is now attracting interest from the likes of Newcastle and Borussia Dortmund.
Wolves have been able to resist that interest so far, but Wyness believes that the situation may yet change in the coming weeks.
Villa's former chief Wyness - who served as CEO at Villa Park between 2016 and 2018 and now runs a consultancy business advising elite clubs - believes that Mane will be hugely "unhappy" with the fact that he is now a Championship player.
Nevertheless, he feels that another season at Molineux will benefit the starlet more in the long run than if he were to make a big move this summer.
Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider's Inside Track podcast, the Scottish businessman outlined that Mane is likely to stay put unless an "extraordinary bid" comes in.
"I think it will be another year at Molineux, and he'll then get a move by next summer. However, having said that, there could well be a price that comes in that Wolves will find very hard to reject," he said.
"The player, I'm sure, won't be happy about being a Championship player because I think he is quality. But I think his own deal for himself personally would be better off if he stays until next summer and then negotiates the deal at that time.
"I'd expect that possibly to happen unless something extraordinary comes in. And I don't think he's quite of that quality to get an extraordinary bid.
"He won't have been happy about the whole Rob Edwards situation, but he's one of the assets that they want to keep hold of if they can and utilise him in terms of that promotion push.
"There's going to be some serious competition in the Championship. It's going to be a phenomenal season to watch."
Former West Ham scout Mick Brown told Football Insider earlier this week that Wolves are well-placed to sign West Ham striker Pablo this summer.
The 22-year-old could be in line to leave the London Stadium already, and Wolves have taken an interest, with Peixoto having previously managed him at Gil Vicente.
Super agent Jorge Mendes played a big role in the frontman getting his January move to East London, and Brown expects him to hold the key to a deal for Wolves.
The Brazilian has failed to make an impact for the Hammers so far, and is still waiting for his first goal after 17 appearances.
