After Bafana Bafana's marred 2-0 defeat against Mexico, Kickoff has an update on the suspension rules and availability of players red-carded or cautioned throughout the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
South Africa still has bad memories of suspension rules, after Bafana were docked three points and had a monetary fine during the World Cup qualifiers for playing midfielder Teboho Mokoena against Lesotho, a match he was supposed to sit out due to an accumulation of yellow cards.
Bafana already have two players who have triggered a careful look into the FIFA rule book, after Sphephelo Sithole and Themba Zwane were red-carded in a 2-0 loss to co-hosts El Tri.

Unlike in the qualifiers, a player who has received a red-card misses only one game at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which means Sithole and Zwane would be available in South Africa's last group game against South Korea on 25 June.
There is also another suspension rule that is important, the accumulation of yellow cards. A player who receives two yellow cards within the same disciplinary block, is automatically suspended for the upcoming match.
In South Africa's instance, Mokoena and Nkosinathi Sibisi are sitting on a yellow card each picked up in a defeat to Mexico, which means should they get cautioned once more against Czechia on Thursday, they would both or either one of them be suspended for the last group encounter against The Taegeuk Warriors.

However, the good news for all other Bafana players who were not cautioned against Javier Aguirre's charges is that there are two yellow card resets introduced by FIFA in their largest world cup yet, of 48 teams.
After the group stages, all single yellow cards will be wiped out for all the teams going to the round of 32 and because of the extended round, there will be another reset of single cautions after the quarter-finals, which guarantees that no player would miss the final due to an accumulation of yellow cards.
However, there are no such resets or amnesties for red-cards, as players who are red-carded will miss the upcoming match regardless of the stage of the tournament.
