Derek McInnes has become the clear frontrunner for Rangers’ manager position, much to the anger of the Ibrox faithful.
Reports emerged on Friday that the Gers have officially asked for permission to speak to the Hearts boss, with the Tynecastle club set to not stand in the way of his departure.
Danny Rohl is closing in on a move to Red Bull Salzburg, which has led the Rangers hierarchy to identify McInnes as his potential replacement.
However, many of the Ibrox faithful are not impressed, believing that the 54-year-old is a failure after he missed out on the Scottish Premiership title this season.
McInnes has been in charge of Hearts since 2025 and came within 90 minutes of the top-flight title before a controversial 3-1 defeat to Celtic on the final day ended these hopes.
The manager had previously come close to landing the Rangers job in 2017 before an 11th-hour U-turn.
Despite Hearts only missing out on their first Scottish Premiership title since 1960 on the last day, many Rangers fans were not impressed with their campaign.
The Jambos were up against a Gers and Celtic side that were in crisis, and still could not get the job done.
As a result, Rangers fans have been quick to point out that McInnes is a failure and may not be the man to end their trophy drought next season.
Therefore, many have taken to X to state that they do not want the Hearts manager in the dugout for the 2026-27 campaign amid the Daily Record’s report that talks are now set to begin between the two parties.
Hot take but appointing Derek McInnes would be a worse appointment than Russell Martin
Yep agree, bottle merchant big time, bring back stevie G.
agreed. failed to win the league against the 2 worst OF teams i can ever remember. no cup success either. Gerrard or its D.O.A
100 percent agree mate, this muscat Del Boy stevie G patter is another embarrassment There’s 100s of managers out there !
absolutely do not get the clamour for McInnes
Please no. This is not the right decision I'm telling u
If it’s McInnes he will be gone by New Year, he does not have the winning mentality, may have played for us ( as a bit part player) never one of us
Steven Gerrard is another name who has been continuously linked to the Rangers job in recent days.
The former Gers manager had talks with the club previously, before the appointments of Russell Martin and Rohl.
If discussions with McInnes do not work out, then it is likely that Gerrard will be one of the favourites to come in.
The Liverpool legend was the last Rangers manager to lift the Scottish Premiership title, with Celtic now winning the last five in the top-flight.
