Ralf Rangnick has yet to commit to Milan despite the club being his preferred option, with the Austria national team coach harbouring significant doubts about whether the promises made to him will actually be honoured.

According to Austrian outlet Wiener Zeitung, via CalcioMercato, the 67-year-old met with Milan representatives in Vienna at the end of May and is understood to be attracted by the prospect of taking over as technical director of such a prestigious club. However, he is not fully convinced.

The report reveals that Rangnick does not trust the situation entirely, citing concerns about the numerous influential figures surrounding the club and whether the full executive control he has been promised would genuinely materialise. He is now demanding written guarantees and clear commitments before agreeing to anything.

Milan have offered Rangnick what he desires most: total control at the top of the sporting pyramid with complete decision-making authority.

But Rangnick wants more than verbal assurances, and the complex power structures at San Siro, which include the significant influence of Zlatan Ibrahimovic, appear to be giving him pause for thought.

The alternative on the table is a contract extension with the Austrian football federation, who have increased their financial offer following the arrival of new sponsors.

Despite initial resistance from federation officials who feared Rangnick would turn the organisation into a personal fiefdom, a renewed deal is now on the table.

According to Wiener Zeitung, money is not Rangnick’s priority: his ambition is to professionalise Austrian football as a whole, and that mission remains unfinished with Euro 2028 on the horizon.
