Senegal’s national team is facing growing instability behind the scenes during its 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign, with financial, administrative and logistical problems reportedly affecting preparations ahead of a crucial group-stage match against Norway.
According to Spanish newspaper Sport, tensions have emerged within the Senegal camp despite a competitive performance against France in its opening World Cup match. Senegal was reportedly close to securing a positive result before a late goal from Kylian Mbappé handed victory to the French side.
The report said off-field issues have raised concerns about the team’s focus as it seeks to keep its qualification hopes alive.
One of the main sources of frustration reportedly involves unpaid bonuses. Players have yet to receive financial rewards they were promised, despite the Senegalese Football Federation having benefited from significant revenues, including prize money from the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations and qualification bonuses for the World Cup.
The situation has reportedly created unease within the squad ahead of a decisive match against Norway, where Senegal needs a positive result to remain in contention for a place in the knockout stage.
The report also highlighted logistical complaints related to the team’s accommodations in the United States. Several players have reportedly expressed dissatisfaction with the hotel selected for the delegation, arguing that the facilities do not meet the standards expected by a team competing at football’s premier international tournament.
Additional concerns have emerged regarding the reduction in the size of the team’s support staff. According to the report, the cuts resulted in the absence of the head chef who accompanied the squad during the Africa Cup of Nations, a change that has reportedly affected players’ dietary arrangements during the tournament.
The uncertainty extends to the coaching staff as well. Head coach Pape Thiaw has reportedly not received his salary for more than five months, while his contract has already expired, placing the technical staff in a difficult position during a critical stage of the competition.
Despite the reported challenges, Senegal is expected to rely on the experience of key players, including captain Sadio Mané, as it prepares for a pivotal encounter against a Norway side led by Erling Haaland and Martin Ødegaard.
A positive result against Norway could revive Senegal’s hopes of advancing to the next round, but the team will first need to overcome the distractions that have overshadowed its World Cup campaign off the field.
