Sources: Celtic ready to move for 'cut-price' Ivan Basic deal amid World Cup worry
Celtic are lining up a move to sign Astana midfielder Ivan Basic this summer, sources have told Football Insider.
The Hoops have been "keeping tabs" on the 24-year-old in recent months, and he is seen as someone who "fits the bill" for Martin O'Neill.
Basic will be available on a "cut-price" fee, as he has just six months remaining on his current contract, and Astana are prepared to sanction a summer exit.
The 24-year-old is currently away at the World Cup with Bosnia and Herzegovina, and there is concern from Celtic that interest in him will spread if he continues to impress.
The Glasgow giants view midfield reinforcements as one of their top priorities to add to their squad this summer, with several members of their squad facing uncertain futures.
Basic has been identified as a player who would be capable of coming in and adding quality to their squad, but there is a need for them to move quickly.
Celtic have also been linked with a move for Benjamin Tahirovic in recent weeks, but Basic is the latest man from Bosnia's squad to take their fancy.
He is currently playing his club football for Astana in Kazakhstan, having previously spent three years in the Russian top flight with Orenburg.
Basic came through the youth ranks of Zrinjski Mostar back in his homeland and has now progressed to the point where he is a key player for his country.
The midfielder is taking part in his first-ever major tournament at international level, and played 62 minutes in his country's 1-1 draw with Canada in their opening game.
That clash saw him line up against Celtic defender Alistair Johnston, and there is a growing chance that the pair could be teammates at Parkhead next term.
Astana have already made it clear that they won't stand in Basic's way if he wants to move this summer, as his contract situation looks set to leave them relatively powerless.
Football Insider revealed at the end of May that Celtic are planning to sell Reo Hatate this summer, as they view this as their "best opportunity" to cash in on him.
The 28-year-old didn't start a single game for the Bhoys after the league split in the Scottish Premiership, and O'Neill has already moved on from him in his long-term plans.
Hatate is about to enter the final two years of his contract at Celtic Park, and the club are ready to take any offer that comes their way this summer.
They are expecting a significant turnover in the middle of the park, and Hatate is one man who looks set to make way as part of the refresh.
