The experienced goalkeeper moved within touching distance of Khune’s club record after registering his 14th Betway Premiership clean sheet of the season during Chiefs’ impressive 2-0 victory over Sekhukhune United on Sunday.
With just two league matches remaining, Petersen now sits only two clean sheets away from equalling the benchmark set by Khune during the 2017/18 campaign, when the legendary shot-stopper managed 16 shutouts in a single Premiership season.
It is a statistic that underlines just how important “Beeza” has become for Amakhosi this season, particularly during a turbulent campaign where consistency has often been difficult to find across the pitch.
While Chiefs’ attacking struggles have dominated headlines throughout the season, Petersen has quietly emerged as one of the club’s most reliable performers between the posts.
His composure, leadership and ability to produce crucial saves have helped keep Chiefs competitive in several tight encounters.
Now, the 31-year-old has two opportunities left to make history.
Chiefs first face AmaZulu FC at Moses Mabhida Stadium on 16 May before concluding their league campaign against Chippa United on 23 May, also in Durban.
Should Petersen keep clean sheets in both fixtures, he would draw level with Khune’s impressive record, further strengthening his case as one of the standout goalkeepers in the league this season.
