Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has explained why Portugal opted to face Nigeria in an international friendly, stressing that the decision is not based on rankings or comparisons but on playing style and physical intensity.

Portugal are set to use the high-profile friendly as part of their final preparations ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the United States, Mexico and Canada, with Nigeria selected as one of their African opponents for the build-up fixture.

Speaking at the pre-match press conference on Tuesday, Chelle insisted there was no disrespect in comparing teams, while highlighting Portugal’s likely motivation for choosing Nigeria.

“This is not a lack of respect. We cannot compare Nigeria and DR Congo. I don't think about who is the best team. I think about the philosophy. I think they want to play an African team because of the intensity of the game. I speak about physicality so this is a good opportunity to play against us,” the Super Eagles coach said.

He further suggested that Portugal’s decision may be linked to their recent meeting with DR Congo in the playoff final.

“We played against DR Congo in the World Cup playoffs and we lost on penalties. Maybe they want to see the way they can play against them. I just do my job even if tomorrow I'm not the coach," he added.

Chelle also spoke about his long-term approach to squad building, insisting that his focus remains on developing a balanced team capable of competing at the highest level, regardless of external pressure or coaching uncertainty.

“My job is to bring the best players in the country to have a mix between the older and younger guys because Nigeria is still Nigeria after Eric.I spoke a year ago the way I want to do my job and I did my job, I am not lucky," he said.

He further explained his selection philosophy, stressing that form and consistency at club level remain key factors in his decisions.

“When I bring a player he deserves to be here because he shows something every week. My job is to put the player in the best condition, in the best moment, and sometimes the best moment comes and I don't want this moment. We miss one or two players and this guy cannot play, the only way for me is to do the best choice.”

The friendly against Portugal is expected to provide a stern test for the Super Eagles as they continue preparations for upcoming international competitions and squad evaluation under Chelle’s leadership.
