Silvio Baldini has been appointed as Italy’s caretaker coach for June friendlies against Luxembourg and Greece, but the Italian FA is expected to appoint a new head coach after June 22, 2026, when the FIGC Presidential election takes place.

Italy will visit Luxembourg and Greece for friendly games in June after failing to qualify for the World Cup for the third consecutive time.

Coach Gennaro Gattuso resigned alongside the Italian FA (FIGC) President, Gabriele Gravina, in the aftermath of a World Cup play-off final defeat to Bosnia and Herzegovina in March, with Baldini promoted from the U21 squad to the first team for the June friendlies.

The Italian Football Association will vote for a new President on June 22, 2026, with Giovanni Malagò and Giancarlo Abete as the only candidates.

Once the new FIGC President is elected, his priority will be to name a new Italy head coach to take over from September’s Nations League games against Belgium and Turkey.

Currently, Italian media mentions Antonio Conte, Massimiliano Allegri, Claudio Ranieri, and Roberto Mancini as the main candidates for the job, with Pep Guardiola being an intriguing but seemingly unattainable target.
