As Milan’s leadership structure begins to take shape under Gerry Cardinale and Zlatan Ibrahimovic, one name has emerged from the background to take on a pivotal role in the club’s new era, Bobby Gardiner, a British data analyst set to be promoted to head of scouting ahead of next season.
As noted by MilanNews, Gardiner has actually been part of the Milan furniture since 2019, when he was brought to the club by Hendrik Almstadt, himself recruited by former CEO Ivan Gazidis to oversee data operations.
A Philosophy, Economics and Politics graduate from Durham University, Gardiner had built his analytical reputation writing data-driven football content for British sports platforms, with a particular focus on Swansea City, the club he grew up supporting.
His work at Milan quickly attracted recognition beyond the club.
The Athletic credited Gardiner, alongside colleagues Ben Torvaney and Tiago Estevao, as key figures in the analytical backbone of the Rossoneri’s rebuild that culminated in the 2022 Scudetto triumph. He currently holds the title of Head of Performance Analytics.
Now, according to Matteo Moretto, Gardiner is being elevated to chief scout, a promotion that reflects a deliberate decision by Milan’s ownership to embed data analysis at the heart of their transfer recruitment.
Significantly, he was already sitting in on meetings between Cardinale, Ibrahimovic and reportedly incoming sporting director Marcus Krösche, suggesting his influence on the new structure will be considerable.
His own philosophy offers a clear vision of what comes next.
“I am on my knees begging someone to prove not only that coaches matter, but that they can matter more than players,” he said in a 2023 interview with StatsBomb. “And I can’t wait for spatial data to become more accessible for scouting and player recruitment.”
At Milan, that vision is now his to implement.
