Amorim snubbed Portuguese giants Benfica in favour of Milan move

Ruben Amorim will be the new Milan head coach, with Fabrizio Romano confirming the deal is effectively done as lawyers from both parties exchange documents ahead of a formal announcement. The contract will run for two years with an option to extend until 2029.

The Portuguese coach, according to the reports via MilanNews.it, turned down an approach from Benfica to pursue the Milan project, a decision that underlines the genuine conviction with which he has approached this opportunity.

“Amorim is very convinced,” Romano said. “He said no to other offers such as the one from Benfica and strongly wanted Milan.”

Romano also clarified that reports of an agreement with Oliver Glasner were wide of the mark.

“Glasner has not spoken with Milan since the famous meeting in Munich, Milan disappeared and never made contact again,” he said.

Matthias Jaissle found himself in a similarly uncomfortable position, having received no update from the club as recently as this morning before the Amorim deal was concluded.

Amorim’s availability proved a decisive factor. Sacked by Manchester United in January, he required no compensation, whereas freeing Jaissle from Al-Ahli would have cost Milan a release clause of €10-11 million.
