Bayer 04 Leverkusen have confirmed that teenage midfielder Francis Onyeka has signed a contract extension with the club before sealing a season-long loan move to newly promoted side SV 07 Elversberg ahead of the upcoming Bundesliga campaign.
The 19-year-old attacking midfielder enjoyed a breakthrough season during his loan spell at VfL Bochum in Bundesliga 2, where he established himself as one of the division’s most promising young talents.
Competing in the second division, Onyeka impressed with consistent performances, scoring eight goals and providing one assist in 30 league appearances.
His standout displays attracted interest from several clubs across Germany, but Elversberg, fresh from their promotion, secured his signature on loan as they look to strengthen their squad for survival in the top flight.
The club views the Nigerian-born midfielder as a key addition capable of adding creativity and attacking depth.
Speaking after extending his contract with Leverkusen, Onyeka described the agreement as a major boost to his career development, while expressing excitement about the challenge ahead.
He said the extension was a “great honour” and a source of “further motivation,” adding that he is eager to prove himself week in, week out at Elversberg.
“The contract extension at Bayer 04 is a great honour for me and, at the same time, further motivation,” Onyeka told the club via its official website. “I’m looking forward to the challenge at Elversberg and to proving myself week in, week out in the Bundesliga.”
He reiterated his ambition to break into the Bayer first team, stating that playing for the club remains a childhood dream.
Born in Gummersbach, Onyeka has now committed his long-term future to Leverkusen, with his contract running until the summer of 2032.
