West Ham United striker Callum Wilson appears to have all but confirmed that he will not be signing a new contract this summer.

The 34-year-old arrived at the London Stadium last summer and went close to leaving in January, before Hammers chiefs stepped in to avoid letting him go.

Wilson scored some big goals over the course of the season, earning West Ham points against Burnley, Bournemouth, Tottenham and Everton, but it was not another to keep them in the Premier League.

The Irons are now expected to have their squad pulled apart in the coming months, although manager Nuno Espirito Santo is confirmed to be staying.

West Ham transfer chiefs have a decision to make in the case of Wilson, who presumably could still be convinced to extend his stay.

Breaking news on signings, departures, and contract news from the West Ham United boardroom.

Former Everton chief executive Keith Wyness exclusively told Football Insider last month that West Ham’s decision to keep Wilson was vindicated.

The striker, often forced to pay second fiddle to January arrival Taty Castellanos, popped up with several big goals in the run-in, and was denied another against Arsenal earlier this month.

Fans of the Hammers may look back on the moment Wilson drove the ball into the Arsenal goal in the 97th minute to make it 2-2 with regret, considering the fact that the goal was disallowed for Pablo’s foul.

The forward, another January arrival, had been holding on to David Raya’s arm as the cross came in, with officials left no choice but to disallow the strike.

Had Wilson’s goal stood, and West Ham had earned a point, they may not have been under so much pressure going to Newcastle United in the following game.

Perhaps the 34-year-old would be staying too, given that his message on Wednesday appeared to confirm his intention to leave.

“For now, all I can say is thank you,” he wrote at the end of a long Instagram post. “Thank you to everyone who supported us.

“Your passion is amazing, and I truly hope you return to the Premier League, where you belong, as soon as possible. Take care, Callum.”

Given the fact that Wilson arrived at West Ham on a free transfer last summer, it is unclear how significant his wages are and whether they are viable for the Championship.

It is not clear, either, whether the striker would be open to spending one of the final years of his career in the second tier.

The prospect of taking West Ham back up would surely be attractive, though, and Wilson has prior in the Championship.

Just one season – the 2014-15 campaign – but it was one in which the Englishman scored 20 goals, provided seven assists and won the league with Bournemouth.

Despite his age, Wilson remains a deadly striker in front of goal and would be well worth the wages for a season in the second tier.
